Censored (mosaic version)
"Censored" means certain areas of the picture are processed with a mosaic. This is the long-standing standard practice of the Japanese adult video industry — Japanese law regulates the public distribution of obscene material, and the industry uses the mosaic as a self-regulation standard.
As a result, the vast majority of mainstream JAV produced and distributed within Japan is censored. The censored version is usually also the studio’s official release, with the most stable quality and source.
Uncensored
"Uncensored" means a version without the mosaic. The uncensored content a general viewer comes across mainly has two origins:
- Natively uncensored: some labels present their works in uncensored form from the outset, as a matter of how they are produced and distributed.
- Uncensored leak: a work originally released censored that later circulates online with the mosaic removed (see the next section).
Uncensored leak
An "uncensored leak" refers to this: a work was officially released in censored form, but a version with the mosaic removed later appeared. This kind of version is unofficial circulation — it is not the studio’s official release.
In titles or tags, such versions often carry words like "uncensored", "leaked" or "leak".
Subtitled versions (Chinese / English subtitles)
Original JAV usually has only Japanese audio and no subtitles. A "subtitled version" is one with subtitles added afterwards:
- Chinese subtitles: the version most sought by Chinese-speaking viewers.
- English subtitles: the English-subtitled version.
As speech-recognition technology has spread in recent years, the number of subtitled works has grown sharply, but the quality of automatic AI subtitles varies; human-proofread subtitles are usually more accurate.
Subtitles are an "add-on" — they are a separate dimension from censored / uncensored, so the same work may appear as "censored + subbed", "uncensored + subbed" and other combinations.
Other common version labels
| Label | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 4K / FHD | Quality label; 4K is the highest resolution, FHD is 1080p. |
| VR | An immersive work for VR devices. |
| BEST / compilation | A best-of collection bundling multiple segments, not a single work. |
| Limited-time / discount | A promotional label from the distribution channel, unrelated to the content. |
Which one should I choose?
- Want the most stable source and most consistent quality → choose the official censored version.
- Do not want the mosaic → look for a natively uncensored label, or an uncensored-leak version (note it is unofficial circulation).
- Do not understand Japanese → look for the "subbed" label.
- Mostly on mobile / mobile data → you do not necessarily need 4K; FHD is enough. See the related reading for the quality-versus-smoothness trade-off.
FAQ
Is uncensored always "better" than censored?
That is purely personal preference. Quality depends on the filming and the released version, and has no direct relationship with whether there is a mosaic.
Why can’t I find an uncensored version of a title?
Not every censored work gets an uncensored version; most titles only have the official censored release.
Are Chinese subtitles made officially by the studio?
Usually not. Original JAV normally has no subtitles; Chinese subtitles are generally added afterwards by third parties or the community, and quality varies by source.
